We were privileged to be secure and middle class. It’s that absence of security, of feeling that we’re middle class, all rowing together. That is the most corrosive effect on parents. You’re looking over your shoulder trying to figure out how someone else’s attempt to advantage his or her child is going to disadvantage yours. That’s not a way to live in the world. But that’s the life we live.
